Wow! The stuff is really great! I can’t wait to see it in the game.”

Interesting story. We were approached by two separate developers to work on two Marvel Super Hero Squad games at the same time. This posed an issue we had never come across before. Team crossover.

Since the two titles were technically competing, security measures had to be implemented to avoid crossover. We had to physically separate the two teams, modify forums permissions, and password protect the network. All in all it was a success, and neither team was tainted by the eyeballs of the other. We learned a new lesson in project security and are fully prepared should the situation arise again.

Now back to the project. When Griptonite Games approached us to do 11 minutes of realtime cut scenes for Marvel Super Hero Squad: The Infinity Gauntlet, we knew had the perfect team for the job. We assigned the same team that did Monkey Island and Sam and Max as they had gained a knack for comedic cut scenes. This was a perfect opportunity to show off their talents.  The cut scenes for Infinity Gauntlet were heavy on dialogue, so comedic timing and gestures were paramount to the project. It turned out to be a very good decision.

Griptonite had a script and shotlist already written up, so we could hit the ground running with storyboards. The script was great and the humor came through in the reading, which made our job easier. Ish, one of our animators adopted the phrase “Yes, yes, delicious.” It was his answer to every question asked. It got a little creepy.

There were some obstacles on the project. One being a sequence of six scenes that needed to seamlessly flow together in one long camera move. We also had some issues with the 180 rule. Overall, the project ran super smooth with minimal late nights and weekends. The team at Griptonite was a model client in every way. Supportive, responsive, open to new ideas, and extremely easy to work with. We are very much looking forward to our next project with them.

Marvel Super Hero Squad: The Infinity Gauntlet is set to ship November 16th, 2010. Unfortunately we cant show any of our work on the project till that date. So check in again on the 17th. We’ll have some funny stuff for you to watch.
