Sam & Max: The Devil’s Playhouse

“You guys far exceeded our expectations.”

- Dave Bogan, Art Director, Telltale Games

Telltale Games, the mad geniuses behind the episodic Tales of Monkey Island and Sam & Max were faced with the novel and herculean task of shipping games on a monthly basis. This posed a serious content problem. Like Monkey Island, the Sam & Max franchise is known for its art and animation as much as it is known for its clever and hysterical writing. (Just take a look at the comics and animated series by Steve Purcell.)  How could they produce enough content, at the quality needed to consistently produce an entertaining series like Sam & Max?  Managing and directing a large team of individual contractors was a near impossible task. They just didn’t have the time to manage each individual off-site animator while running their own internal team.

Sam & Max: The Devil’s Playhouse was our first project with Telltale Games, so you can imagine they were a bit nervous handing off such a huge chunk of work to a relatively young studio.  However, their nerves were quickly calmed when they saw how fast we were able to ramp up and deliver a huge amount of scenes at a quality level that “far exceeded their expectations.” In fact, they were so happy with our work that a few short weeks after our first Sam and Max project we were recruited to work on Tales of Monkey Island.  We are honored to have the opportunity to work with such an amazing team as the Sam and Max guys, on such a fantastic series.  We look forward to many more projects with them in the future.

Be sure to watch The Devil’s Playhouse trailer, which shows some of the work we did for this season:

Also, you should visit Telltale’s site and play Seasons One and Two.  The games are absurdly hilarious, wickedly subversive and a whole lot of fun to play.
